There are many outdated or inaccurate ideas about Down syndrome. This section helps separate fact from fiction. Learning the truth can ease fears and prepare you to advocate confidently.

Myth 1: All people with Down syndrome have severe intellectual disabilities.
Fact: Intellectual abilities vary. Many individuals with Down syndrome attend school, have jobs, and live fulfilling, independent lives with support.

Myth 2: People with Down syndrome are always happy.
Fact: Like everyone else, individuals with Down syndrome experience the full range of emotions.

Myth 3: Down syndrome is hereditary.
Fact: Most cases are not inherited. They occur as a random event during the formation of reproductive cells.

Parent Resources

Our members have experienced the full spectrum of emotions which comes from having a child with special needs... Fear, anger, questioning, sadness, comparing, guilt, and more.  We invite you to contact our organization so that we may offer you support and help you connect with other families who understand what you are going through. We have families willing to discuss their experience and share their insights whether it's over the phone, a visit to you your home, or even at the hospital.

Saber que su hijo tendrá síndrome de Down puede resultar abrumador. Probablemente esté experimentando una variedad de emociones a medida que se adapta al diagnóstico. Es completamente natural que tengas una serie de preguntas, inquietudes y/o temores. Todos hemos compartido la experiencia y hemos sentido lo que tú sientes.

Nuestros miembros han experimentado todo el espectro de emociones que surgen al tener un hijo con necesidades especiales... Miedo, enojo, cuestionamiento, tristeza, comparación, culpa y más. Lo invitamos a comunicarse con nuestra organización para que podamos ofrecerle apoyo y ayudarlo a conectarse con otras familias que entienden por lo que está pasando. Tenemos familias dispuestas a hablar sobre su experiencia y compartir sus ideas, ya sea por teléfono, visitándolo en su casa o incluso en el hospital.

Las primeras semanas después del nacimiento de un bebé suelen ser estresantes y agitadas para todos los padres. Es posible que se sienta cómodo comunicándose con nosotros de inmediato o que no esté listo por un tiempo. Tenga en cuenta que estamos aquí para ayudarle en cualquier momento... cuando esté listo. Esperamos conocerlo a usted y a su precioso hijo.
